Better known by its acronym AI, artificial intelligence is a machine’s ability to replicate some of the human brain’s capabilities. While we may not always realize it, AI is already deeply embedded in our society. It’s used across numerous fields, from logistics and healthcare to defense and the economy. AI relies on machine learning (technology that enables machines to learn without being explicitly programmed) and deep learning (where machines can learn autonomously).
Deep learning, as it’s also known, amazed the scientific world with its breakthroughs in the early 21st century. In 2015, this technique enabled AlphaGo to defeat Go champions: an event that sparked fear among several prominent figures. Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, and even Elon Musk warned about the possibility of AI spiraling out of control and threatening humanity. While this scenario may seem exaggerated, there’s a massive neural network with 175 billion parameters called GPT-3, created by OpenAI. It’s said that this network wrote an article for The Guardian last year to reassure us: “I am here to convince you not to worry. Artificial intelligence will not destroy humans. Believe me.” Everyone is wondering when the rise of machine power will stop. Just a few years ago, almost no one thought a network like GPT-3 was possible. This raises new questions: What will its successors be capable of in the future? If some neural networks can already replace dermatologists, why not replace all of us? Let’s reassure ourselves, this is still a long way off. Today, far less alarming opinions are emerging compared to the reactions after AlphaGo’s release. Like that of Fabienne Chauvière, a French radio and TV journalist and producer, who said on France Inter on January 31, 2021: “It’s impressive, but we mustn’t forget it’s just an artificial neural network trained to perform a task: there’s no creativity or real intelligence.” We need to stay realistic about the huge gap between neural networks and true artificial intelligence.
Every movie fan has imagined an AI like the one in Marvel films (Iron Man, Avengers, etc.), Jarvis, an AI with absolute knowledge, capable of understanding our feelings and emotions. Clearly, we’re still far from that. But artificial intelligence is already part of our lives. It’s in our smartphones, computers, and connected devices. Its goal? To make our lives easier! While AI has improved dramatically in recent years, the best is yet to come. But for now, let’s look at what it can already do for us.
In the medical field, AI’s benefits are undeniable. Used for analysis, it can review and accurately scan medical images to detect potential tumors. Capable of working 24/7, it achieves a tumor detection rate close to that of doctors. It can also help prevent natural disasters. AI calculates predictive models and provides crucial support for making the right decisions at the right time. Finally, artificial intelligence can assist police and firefighters. It maps interventions, identifies high-risk areas, and optimizes emergency vehicle routes in real time based on weather, traffic, and other conditions.
AI bridges the gap between programs and machines. It powers voice commands and communication between humans and virtual assistants. While these assistants are far from perfect, they’re improving over time and already handle certain requests well. AI is also found in live chats on websites and social media (chatbots). In the best cases, the bot can answer most of your questions and hand off to a human when it struggles to understand you.
Stop worrying: your phone isn’t listening to you! A Facebook news feed related to a conversation you had with a friend? Amazon and Netflix recommendations that match your needs? Rest assured, these examples come from AI’s power. Capable of processing vast amounts of data, it sorts, organizes, and makes sense of this information using special formulas, guarded by the GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft) as industrial secrets. AI can also be essential for smooth customer service operations. At fAibrik, AI understands requests in different languages, extracts key information (intent, sentiment, priority level, order number, etc.), and does so across various industries. The list goes on, but one thing is certain: artificial intelligence is the technology of the future, and it’s becoming part of our daily lives. Working with and for AI is a key challenge, whether in design or project management.
